The Board of Selectmen serves as the executive team responsible for supervising the affairs of the town and for guiding all town’s officers, board, agencies, commissions and committees toward the accomplishment of the town's long range, comprehensive plans as established by the Town Meeting.
The Board of Selectmen also serve as Scotland's Board of Finance. In this capacity, the Board prepares operating and capital improvement budgets, and oversees the finances of the town.
The board’s functions include:
- Providing counsel to the First Selectman with regard to the administration of town affairs.
- Conducting continuous review of the current and projected fiscal, administrative, governmental, physical and other needs of the town and, on the basis of such review, assuming leadership in the development of appropriate programs to meet such needs.
- Contracting for services, applying for and accepting federal and state grants on behalf of the town.
- Approving appointment to positions in municipal government.
The Board of Selectmen meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. Special meetings can be scheduled at any time with proper notice.
